Irresistible ephemera

Frequently very affordable, and with a repertoire that ranges from delicately artistic to kitsch, paper ephemera is a great entryway into the world of vintage. Part of the charm of paper ephemera is reflected in its name -- when manufactured, it was intended to be ephemeral -- that is, used and thrown away.

Arts and Crafts Movement

The Arts and Crafts Movement style began in the mid-1800's and extended into the early 20th century. This design style had a philosophical underpinning -- a reaction against the dehumanizing nature of manufacturing process, it in turn celebrated the work of craftsmen (and women) who worked either as individuals or as small groups. In many respects, it was the original handmade movement.

The style emphasized the use of high-quality materials and designs that honored the integrity of the material. Architectural and furniture styles emphasized clean, rectilinear lines, while shapes seen in the natural environment often appeared in the decorative arts.

The list of amazing designers and artists of the movement is too long to list, so I'll note a few familiar names: William Morris, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Harry Clarke, Jessie M. King, Frank Lloyd Wright, Elbert Hubbard & the Roycroft Movement, and Gustav Stickley. (Click on their names to see examples of their beautiful work.)

If you notice similarities to art nouveau -- particularly in the illustration style -- it's because the art nouveau style was more or less concurrent with the Arts and Crafts Movement. However, the philosophy behind art nouveau was based upon breaking away from the heavy artistic styles of the past and finding influence in the flowing lines of nature.

Vintage industrial objects are like urban versions of country-style primitives.

And just like you don't need to live in an old farmhouse to have some country primitives in your home, you don't need to live in a loft with exposed brick walls to enjoy vintage industrial design elements.

The popularity of mid-century modern minimalism and Scandinavian style helped give rise to industrial-style designs for use in the home.

While it's easy to buy new items that are rooted in industrial design, vintage industrial items are fabulous finds. As old factories and office buildings were torn down, gutted or renovated to make way for more modern equipment, a lot of materials were salvaged. And thank goodness for that, because so many of these objects are gems of form and function.

Worn industrial items have a grittier feel, but the rust and patina that has formed on them is often what gives them so much appeal and visual interest.

The Mother of the American Valentine

Esther Allen Howland is known as the mother of the American valentine. While she was not the first to create this type of greeting card in U.S., she is credited with having popularized the intricate, multi-layered lace valentine, and propelling it into a major industry.

Esther was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1828. After her graduation from Mount Holyoke College in 1847, she was inspired by the fancy lace-covered English valentines that her father sold in his store and decided to make some of her own.

Using what she knew from the family's business (her father operated the largest book and stationery story in Worcester), and her own considerable artistic ability, she began by importing paper lace and floral decorations from England. Then she went to work with paste and paint and created an array of valentines. One of her brothers was skilled in penmanship and she persuaded him to inscribe sentiments on the cards. Another brother was a salesman for the family business. He agreed to try to get orders for the next season's trade, so she gave him a dozen samples which he added to the inventory for his next sales trip.

Esther's valentines proved more popular than she could have imagined, for her brother returned with an astonishing $5,000 in orders. Undaunted by the size of the task before her, Esther recruited several friends and established a revolutionary all-female assembly line to help her fulfill the orders.

Her creations were an instant hit. Despite their high price tag — many at $5 to $10 each, and some truly extravagant ones, bedecked with ribbons, satin, and silk, which cost up to $30 — the business boomed, yielding more than $100,000 annually. After over thirty years, she sold her business to the George C. Whitney Company in 1881, and retired to take care of her aging father. Esther died in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1904.

While other manufacturers competed for the affection of the public, none could compete with the quality, taste, and style of Esther Howland. She was a visionary who had a lasting impact upon valentine history.

I'm behind the curve on the TV series Mad Men--and trying desperately to catch up before season 5 starts in March. Like many other vintage lovers, I'm there as much for the hairstyles, dresses, and set design as the drama, dysfunction, and dalliances.

One of the things I enjoy most in this rich 1960s period piece are the little background touches--the wallpaper in Betty Draper's kitchen, the roly poly glasses on Don's desk, the clock on the wall in Peggy's mom's apartment. An art nouveau Christmas greeting

Today is the perfect day to share with you some of my most cherished vintage items -- four Christmas cards that the art nouveau illustrator Dugald Stewart Walker drew to send to his personal friends.

Dugald Stewart Walker lived in Virginia all his life (1883-1937,) save for the years that he studied at the New York School of Design. His beautiful, immensely detailed illustrations were featured in a number of books and also on magazine covers.

Walker was almost as fey as the fairies, elves and other magical creatures that he loved to draw, so it is no wonder that his Christmas cards are ornate and delightful:

I have never been anywhere except Richmond, Virginia, and New York, because I have always been told that only grown-up people were allowed to travel. But the good East Wind and the kindly Moon have taken me on rapturous journeys high above the world to get an enchanted view of things. In this book I have put some of my discoveries, but if you are looking here for real likeness of the things that any one could see if he were grown up, you had better close the covers now. You cannot expect me to draw an exact picture of the North Pole or of a Chinese lady's feet or of a sea-cucumber. But if you are interested in what the East Wind or the Father Stork or the Moon told me, then look with my eyes and you will not mind very much if the courtiers in the ogre's court, or the dock leaves in the Garden of Paradise, are not just as a grown-up person thinks they should be.

Small is beautiful

If you love looking at vintage gift guides but aren't sure how you could incorporate vintage items in your holiday gift-giving, consider starting small. Adding small and unique vintage items can make your total gift package more colorful and personal. Mixing old and new gift items can produce fantastic results -- and I'll give you a few examples from my own shopping list for this year.

I am giving my brother a new ball cap with his alma mater's logo on it, but because he's a science guy and keeps bees as a hobby, this little 1930's book that I found at a flea market will also be part of his gift. He will probably put on the hat and immediately start reading the book.

Because she lives on a farm with my brother, my sister-in-law can't drive to the health club every day during the winter and uses exercise DVDs to stay fit. I'm giving her a new DVD, but she's also getting this wonderful bit of vintage agrarian advertising that I purchased from My3Chicks -- it will look beautiful in their farmhouse.

When I reached into the hat for the office Secret Santa exchange, I drew the name of a fellow who asked Santa for almonds, pistachios and cashews. He's getting a stash of nuts, but he'll be able to eat them out of a great little vintage bowl that I purchased from Moon Over Marilyn.

I have a friend who loves antiques and collects decor items to celebrate her Dutch heritage. Earlier this year I found a book published in 1923 that is absolutely perfect for her -- the topic is Holland, the little girl on the cover looks very much like her youngest child, and ...there was a beloved Aunt Wilhelmina in the family!

So start with small steps and see what you find -- vintage shopping is like going on treasure hunt, and it is such a welcome relief to the hustle and bustle of large shopping venues.

Antiquated, But Not Forgotten

I love to collect obsolete things. I particularly prefer old stuff that is clever yet has fallen by the wayside, such as my collection of wooden soap powder holders shaped like teapots. Decorative and useful, these relics could once be found on many 1940s kitchen counters.

Back when dishes were washed by hand using soap flakes or powder, these dispensers kept the soap close at hand in a pretty container. Perhaps they were the handiwork of kids in junior high wood shop class or dads tinkering in their garage workshop. I suppose it was then left to mom to add paint and decals to dress them up.

These vintage containers are fairly rare. Every now and then, I find one at an estate sale, the kind where you have the run of the house and are able to peek into kitchen cabinets and root around basements. Other times, I've gotten lucky and discovered one at a thrift store or flea market.

If you come across one of these soap holders, it will add vintage charm to any laundry room and also be quite useful. Keep one near your washing machine if you happen to use powered laundry detergent. I have one next to my laundry sink where I keep it filled with my secret weapon, BIZ, which I use to soak out stubborn stains from vintage linens.

My wooden soap powder holders embody everything I love about collecting vintage items; they are handmade, useful, kitschy — and most important, fun.

by The Happy Hoarder	The uses are endless for old jewelry. Rhinestone pieces make the flashiest of additions to a purse or a hat, or even the heel/sole of a pump. String an old brooch onto a newly designed necklace to mix the old and the new for a fantastic look. Old ties, barrettes, hair combs, even old shoe clips, glasses, and cuff links and be repurposed into some spectacular pieces - from new hair accessories, to embellishments on scarves and totes. The possibilities are endless!
While I would never recommend using a perfectly functional brooch in this way, and would advise repairing damaged vintage items if at all possible, if a piece is beyond wearable repairs, don't throw it in the trash. Reuse and recycle!

November is a month where many of us in the northern hemisphere no longer have work to do in the garden, but we get busy in the kitchen. We turn from flowers to flours, but there's a lot of vintage fun to be had with both, even as we near Thanksgiving.

Gardeners are always thinking ahead to the next season, but at least in my case, those thoughts lean toward what I'm going to plant next year, and not what I'm doing with my gardening tools. When the first dandelion sprouts, I'm always on a search for that dandelion digger, and I never remember where I put it away. November is a nice time to clean off and organize those tools, and a vintage crate is a great way to store smaller tools -- you'll know exactly where to go when you need something next spring.
